The European Commission has published new guidance and FAQs on the implementation of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The aim is clear: from August 2026, companies should be able to navigate the new regulatory framework more easily. At the same time, it is evident that action is both concrete and urgent. Businesses need to address the requirements early to ensure compliance on time and avoid potential risks.
Here are five key obligations that companies should be aware of:
1) Registration & Compliance
Companies must register in national manufacturer databases and prepare a declaration of conformity for each type of packaging, confirming adherence to PPWR requirements.
2) PFAS Ban in Food Contact Materials
From 12 August 2026, food packaging must not contain PFAS exceeding established limits.
3) Design for Recycling & Recyclability
By 2030, nearly all packaging must meet strict recyclability criteria.
4) Packaging Minimization (Art. 10 PPWR)
Weight, volume, and material use must be reduced to the minimum necessary—a mandatory requirement for both manufacturers and importers.
5) Extended Labeling Requirements
Standardized labeling will make it significantly easier to sort packaging for separate collection in the future.
In our hands-on events focused on packaging, you’ll receive a practical toolkit for ensuring legally compliant and actionable PPWR implementation.
