Europe’s sustainability transition hits pause – but not the debate

Akademie Fresenius Online Conference: Green Claims and Sustainability Labelling

On 24 September 2025, the Council of the EU approved a “stop-the-clock” mechanism to postpone the application dates of both the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

This measure — part of the broader Omnibus package aimed at simplifying sustainability rules — introduces a phased approach, delaying reporting and due diligence obligations for second- and third-wave companies.

Just days later, at the Brussels conference on 29 September 2025, NGOs and MEPs voiced concern that these adjustments, along with the evolving Green Claims framework, risk creating regulatory uncertainty and weakening consumer and environmental protections.

The question now: Can the EU strike the right balance between simplification and ambition?

These questions will take centre stage at the 3rd International Akademie Fresenius Online Conference 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 on 10 February 2026.

This conference will explore:

  • EU sustainability labelling initiatives – Empowering Consumers (EmpCo) & the Green Claims Directive
  • National frameworks and label practices – France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy
  • Latest case law and market experience – Eco-Score, climate neutrality labels, and due diligence in practice
  • Corporate communication challenges – How to present full environmental impact data credibly
