The European Commission has proposed a new Recommendation to monitor the presence of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and other bisphenols in food, with follow-up investigations to trace unintentional contamination—especially from recycled food contact materials (FCMs) like paper and paperboard.
Monitoring to be carried out by Member States, with active participation from food businesses and packaging producers.
Recommended timeframe: 2025–2027
Focus: Detection of BPA/BPS levels ≥ 0.01 mg/kg (10 µg/kg). Methods must reach detection limits of 1 µg/kg
The goal? To better understand “unavoidable” contamination and distinguish it from intentional use.
