Overview

The fight against greenwashing is entering a new phase: Enforcement.

Since September 2026, the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo) has been applicable across Europe, fundamentally changing the rules for environmental claims, climate-neutrality statements and sustainability labels. At the same time, the withdrawal of the Green Claims Directive proposal has created uncertainty about the future regulatory landscape.

Companies must now navigate new national implementation measures, increasing enforcement activity, growing litigation risks and evolving guidance from authorities.

Timeline of key milestones

  • 27 March 2026: Deadline for Member States to implement EmpCo
  • September 2026: EmpCo requirements become applicable
  • 2026-2027: First enforcement actions, court decisions and compliance experience emerge across Europe
  • 2027: Companies adapt sustainability communication to the new anti-greenwashing landscape

At the Online Conference, leading legal and industry experts will explain how authorities and courts assess environmental claims in practice and what businesses need to do to remain compliant in the new enforcement environment.

Highlights:

  • EmpCo: The new reality for green claims in Europe
  • Impact of the withdrawal of the Green Claims Directive
