Food Fraud: New Analysis Methods for Food Profiling

International Conference to discuss defence mechanisms for protection against food fraud throughout the supply chain

“Food fraud”, i.e. food scams and fake food, is one of the major challenges currently facing the food industry in the light of supply chains that stretch right all around the world and ever more complex processing methods. An International Conference presented by Akademie Fresenius – set to take place in Frankfurt/Germany on 24 and 25 October – will be discussing the most urgent questions connected with how to work with the current policy and its application.

This conference will be dealing with governmental initiatives and recently completed and ongoing projects. This will include an exchange on threats to authenticity and how these can be mitigated. New analysis methods designed for implementation in both a laboratory and a production environment as well as sectoral examples will be up for discussion. Reports on these topics will be provided by representatives from the EU Food Fraud Network, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), the monitoring authorities in the European Member States, test laboratories and international food companies, such as Nestlé, General Mills and illycaffè.

The agenda covers the advantages of using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) to prove the authenticity of food, as well as the deployment of new mobile detection devices. Company representatives will be reporting on their practical experience with rapid authentication tests for coffee and on identifying the animal species  used in meat products. In addition, the experts will be discussing which legal steps the individual EU states and the EU as a whole can take to combat the increase in food fraud.
