Overview

This conference is aiming to give you an insight on sustainability claims and product carbon footprints in the jungle of the current legal framework in the EU and the one to come. In a compact format of an intensive 1-day conference, you will be familiarised with Eco-Score and Planet-Score in France and sorting instructions. You will also hear about mandatory environmental labelling for Italy including packaging material and sorting instructions. In addition you will benefit from first experience with the Enviroscore in the UK and an introduction of the initiative „Together for Carbon Labelling“. Listen also to KLIM, the climate positivity movement driven by regenerative agriculture. Finally you will be informed about the latest jurisprudence in Germany including risks related to general statements of environmental benefits such as „sustainable“, „climate neutral“ or „environmentally friendly“.

Shafik Asal is a Co-Founder of ECO2 Initiative, an environmental consulting company created in 2006 and located in Paris. Shafik is responsible as a Managing Director but he focuses also on eco-design training and he is in charge of the sustainable food department. Besides that he is a Co-Founder of Etiquettable, the first collaborative app for sustainable food and the co-founder of the Eco-score project.

Robert Gerlach

Klim (Carbon Farmed Solutions), Germany

Robert Gerlach is the CEO and Co-Founder of Klim. Klim enables farmers to transition towards regenerative agriculture with the Klim app and supports them financially with the Klim label. He has a background in cleantech and social impact related product development and R&D, and teaches sustainable product and business model innovation as a guest lecturer at the ESCP Europe and TU Berlin. He previously founded Threebility and holds a PhD in engineering science from the University of Oxford.

Bärbel Hintermeier

German Cereal Processing, Milling and Starch Industries’ Association (VGMS), Germany

Bärbel Hintermeier is a Food Lawyer and is responsible for food law, quality and safety topics and coordinates questions on sustainability at the German Cereal Processing, Milling and Starch Industries’ Association (VGMS). In 2021 she left the law firm meyer.rechtsanwälte in Munich to join the VGMS. At meyer.rechtsanwälte she was an Attorney at Law and advised domestic and international operating companies in the food sector, especially on the composition and marketability of innovative products as well as the labelling and advertisement of foods.

Manuel Schuh is Public Affairs Manager at Nestlé Germany. He is responsible for environmental topics with a focus on climate change and circular economy. Additionally, he is in charge of the preparation of the annual CSR report and stakeholder surveys of Nestlé Germany. In 2018 he left Lanxess to join Nestlé.

Cesare Varallo

Food Law Latest, Italy

Cesare Varallo is a Food Lawyer in Italy and a Global Advisor on food safefy, food labelling and food regulatory issues. In 2013 he founded foodlawlatest.com and started his independent consultancy activity. He works at the intersection between science, law, business and social sciences. From 2014 to 2018 he was acting also as the Vice President Business and Regulatory Affairs EU at Inscatech. He teaches food law related matters in several Universities in Italy and abroad and he's member of the supervisory board of MoniQa association.
