For many years, the Akademie Fresenius Contaminants Conference has been the perfect platform for bringing together the scientific, industrial and regulatory communities. With the COVID-19 crisis, it has become difficult to gather physically. However, since we all need to continue to learn from one another, we have decided to keep up our dialogue in the virtual space. We therefore cordially invite you to join this year’s Online Conference. Plenty of exciting presentations are awaiting you!     Jan Baele is the RASFF Head of Sector and part of the European Commission DG SANTE Unit responsible for coordinating and managing the RASFF system across EU countries. In 2018 he and RASFF teams across the EU dealt with about 4,000 alerts and notifications.

    European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Italy

    Katleen Baert is a Bio-engineer in chemistry and has been a Scientific Officer in the BIOCONTAM Unit of EFSA since 2010. Before joining EFSA she worked for the Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain as a Risk Assessor for biological and chemical hazards.

    Alan R. Boobis

    Imperial College London, UK

    Alan R. Boobis retired from his chair at Imperial College London June 2017, and is now Emeritus Professor of Toxicology at the College. His research interests include mechanistic toxicology, risk assessment and the effects of mixtures. He has published over 250 original research papers and has been a member of the EFSA PPR Panel and the Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain. He has been a member/Chair of Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues and of the Joint FAO/ WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (residues of veterinary drugs) for approx. 20 years. He currently chairs the UK Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment.

    Neil Buck

    Neil Buck is a Corporate Toxicologist for General Mills. He spends most of his time on innovation of products and production processes and in managing technical regulatory affairs. Neil has spent more than 20 years in industry. He participates in Committees in Food Drink Europe, the US Grocery Manufacturers Association, and both ILSI EU and North America.

    Birgit Christall

    Food Federation Germany, Germany

    Birgit Christall is a Food Chemist and has a long history as expert in contaminants and especially pesticide residues in food. She worked in different private laboratories, for authorities and the baby food industry. In 2010 she joined the Food Federation Germany (former BLL). She is responsible for topics on residues and contaminants in the association.

    Benedikt Cramer

    University of Münster, Germany

    Benedikt Cramer is working at the Institute of Food Chemistry at the University of Münster as Head of the Service Unit “Instrumental analysis and spectroscopy”. He is developing methods for the analysis of mycotoxins and the detection of new metabolites and degradation products.

    Karma Fussell

    Nestlé, Switzerland

    Karma Fussell is a Toxicologist and a Senior Specialist in Chemical Food Safety at Nestlé with expertise in developmental and reproductive toxicology and endocrine disruption measured in vivo and in vitro. She joined Nestlé in 2014 after concluding a Post-Doc begun in 2011 at BASF, where she also became a Study Director in 2012.

    Peter Fürst

    Münster, Germany

    Peter Fürst retired from the CVUA-MEL (Chemical and Veterinary Analytical Institute Münsterland-Emscher-Lippe) board in March 2019 and now works part-time at the University of Münster as a Honorary Professor. He joined the EFSA CONTAM Panel from 2006 to 2015 where he was Vice-Chair from 2012 to 2015. Since last year he has been a member of the EFSA FAF Panel.

    Bettina Grasl-Kraupp

    Medical University of Vienna, Austria

    Bettina Grasl-Kraupp is a Professor and a European Registered Toxicologist and leads the Research Unit “Chemical safety and cancer prevention” at the Institute for Cancer Research of the Medical University of Vienna. She is a member of several scientific societies and since 2014 she has been a member of the EFSA CONTAM Panel and is the Chair of the WG on Glycoalkaloids.

    Rüdiger Helling

    Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Consumer Protection, Germany

    Rüdiger Helling worked as Head of the Food Contact Materials and Consumer Goods Section at the Saxon State Laboratory for Public and Veterinary Health for 14 years and is member of several scientific advisory committees. In his current position as Head of Division at the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs and Consumer Protection he is responsible for the whole diversity of not only contaminants in food.

    Ron Hoogenboom

    Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR), The Netherlands

    Ron Hoogenboom is the assistent Programme Leader Food Contaminants at Wageningen Food Safety Research, dealing with environmental contaminants, pesticides and toxins from moulds, algae and plants. Since 2012 he has been a member of the EFSA CONTAM Panel and is the vice-chair of the WG on PFASs.

    Luisa Ramos Bordajandi

    European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Italy

    Luisa Ramos Bordajandi is a Scientist focused on the development of multidimensional analytical techniques for the analysis of contaminants in food. In 2008, she joined EFSA and acts since then as a Scientific Officer within the BIOCONTAM Unit. There she provides support for the EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain and its Working Groups in the development of risk assessments.

    Dieter Schrenk

    University of Kaiserslautern, Germany

    Dieter Schrenk has been a Professor for Food Chemistry and Environmental Toxicology at the University of Kaiserslautern since 1996. In 2005 he took on the full professorship for Food Chemistry and Toxicology. He joined the EFSA CONTAM Panel in 2003. Since 2018 he has been the Chair of this panel.

    Tanja Schwerdtle

    German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), Germany

    Tanja Schwerdtle is a Food Chemist and has been a Full Professor for Food Chemistry at the University of Münster since 2008 and at the University of Potsdam’s Institute of Nutritional Science since 2013. Since March 2020 she has been the Vice President of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin. She is a member of numerous scientific committees, such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). She is the Chair of the WG on PFASs.

    Holger Sieg

    German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), Germany

    Holger Sieg is a Biochemist and has been the Head of the Junior Research Group Nanotoxicology based in the Food Safety Department at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Berlin since 2017. The group conducts research concerning the uptake and effects of orally ingested nanomaterials on the human body, with a main focus on the intestine and liver and is involved in national and international research projects.

    Richard Stadler is the Head of the Institute for Food Safety & Analytical Science in Lausanne. Richard has held several research and quality management positions within Nestlé. He is also the Chairman of the FoodDrinkEurope contaminants expert group.

    European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Italy

    Hans Steinkellner has been a Senior Scientific Officer (Toxicologist) in the Biological Hazards and Contaminants Unit (BIOCONTAM) of EFSA in Parma since 2014. From 2007 to 2014 he was Scientific Officer in the Pesticide Unit. Before joining EFSA he worked for the European Chemicals Bureau of the JRC.

    Barilla, Italy

    Michele Suman is the Head of the Food Safety & Authenticity Research Unit at Barilla, working in an international context on research projects within the field of food chemistry, food safety-quality-authenticity, food contact materials, sensing and mass spectrometry applications. He is the Chair of the Italian National Normative Organisation (UNI) Food Authenticity Working Group, the Chair of the ILSI Process Related Compounds & Natural Toxins Task Force and a Member of the Scientific Board of the Italian Chemistry Society - Food Chemistry Inter-divisional Group.

    Angelika Tritscher is the Global Food Safety Director for the Danone’s Specialised Nutrition Division since 2019, assuring the safety of the products in the early life and medical nutrition business. Before she was WHO’s Risk Assessment and Management Coordinator for its Food Safety and Zoonoses Department.
