Akademie Fresenius conference in Cologne to discuss the safety assessment of food contact materials: Are better protection and standardised provisions in sight?

Hardly any other question in the food analytics area is currently the subject of such intensive and controversial discussion as the safety assessment of the substances contained in food contact materials. According to European Parliament information, there are currently up to 100,000 different materials in existence, most of which have never been examined with respect to their effects on health. The European Parliament is now demanding stricter safety regulations for those food contact materials that have never before been examined. At this year’s 6th international Conference "Residues of Food Contact Materials in Food", to be staged by Akademie Fresenius in Cologne on 21 and 22 June 2017, scientists will be discussing how contact materials can be reliably checked and the regulations and monitoring techniques standardised throughout Europe with representatives from the economic sector and the authorities.

The agenda includes up-to-date status reports on the initiatives introduced by the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with respect to pesticide residue analysis techniques for ‘Food Contact Materials’ (FCM) as well as practical field reports on the latest toxicological test methods. Representatives from authority and the industry will also be reporting on the status of the efforts to harmonise the regulation for printing inks across Europe.
