Food Packaging: International Fresenius Conference to Discuss the Future of the EU Legislation on Food Contact Materials

This year, the EU provisions on food contact materials are up for review: The EU Commission will be conducting a series of consultations as part of the review procedure – and has set up a number of scientific focus groups to this purpose. Akademie Fresenius will be holding an international conference in Dusseldorf/Germany on 13 and 14 June to discuss the process status and see what changes are down the road. The organiser has won the support of numerous experts from the scientific sector, the food and packaging industry, as well as from the EU Commission and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for this event.

The agenda will be looking at new procedures for bioassays on non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) as well as where the discussions on mineral oil residues in food from packaging materials currently stand. Experts working in laboratories and in the quality assurance sector will be reporting on ways of improving process analysis along the supply chain with the aim of minimising mineral oil contamination (mineral oil hydrocarbons – MOH). In addition, the conference will be discussing the current challenges arising from microplastics in food packaging materials and new recycling processes.
